Tuesday October 20, 1903 will be a day long to be remembered by Thomas Grenbowski's parishioners at Polonia, as it marked the dedication of his mammoth and handsome new brick church, work upon the same being practically completed. A solemn high mass was celebrated at ten o'clock, with Rev. Rt. Bishop Messmer, of Green Bay, as celebrant; Rev. J. J. Fox, of Green Bay, as presbyter assistant; Rev. August Babinski, of Superior, as deacon of honor; Rev. A. Prodzinski, of Milwaukee as sub-deacon of honor; Rev. L. J. Pescinski, of this city, as deacon; and Rev. Jas. W. Garra, of Junction City as sub-deacon.
Other clergymen present were Revs. Gabriel Messmer of Detroit, S. Elbert of Wausau, W. J. Rica, H. T. Ehr and L. Stefaniak of this city; Jacob Pacholski of Winona, L. Mszisz of South Milwaukee, Leo Jankowski of Alban, J. Smiech of Poland, Wisc., F. Jachimiak of North Creek, T. Malkowski of Hoffa Park, R. Magot of Torun, J. Wojak of Cassel, S. Kasperson of Hull, S. Kobiszewski of Fancher, Francis Laslow of Bevent, J. Pochecka of Lanark, E. P. Lorigan of Custer, and Paul Szulerecki of Milwaukee. Sermons were preached by Bishop Messmer in English and Father Pacholski in Polish. It is estimated that there were between 4,000 and 5,000 people present, coming from all parts of the county, a large number having driven out from this city. The day was an ideal one for a doing into the country and many took advantage thereof.
The services were impressive throughout and the spacious edifice was packed to the doors. After the services a banquet was served to the visiting clergymen and a number of the invited gentlemen in the school room of the Orphans' Home. Short toasts were responded to by the bishop and Fathers Fox, Grenbowski, Babinski, pescinski and others. A pleasant feature of the event was the presentation of a handsome silver candelabrum and eighteen roses by little Helen Zborowski on behalf of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Zborowski, of this city, and in so doing she made the following pleasant remarks: "Dear Father Grenbowski, rector of this congregation: I wish to congratulate you on the dedication of your new church, for which celebration we were invited here today. As a remembrance of this ceremony, please accept these gifts on behalf of my parents. These eighteen roses will remind you of your eighteen years of consecration as a priest of the Catholic church. May God bless you and preserve you, that in the future you may be a bishop of the church."
This day not only marked the dedication of the new church, but was the 18th anniversary of Father Grenbowski's ordination to the priesthood. He is a hard-working clergyman, and to his efforts are due the erection of this grand new edifice, which is the largest in the state outside of Milwaukee, having a seating capacity of between 1,500 and 1,600. It was built by Alex Wochnik, formerly of Milwaukee, and is not only beautiful in design and architecture, but most substantial throughout. The entire cost when finished will be in the neighborhood of $75,000.
